Glucose Monitoring Contact Lens

No more insulin pumps? This contact lens uses transparent sensors to monitor glucose levels in tears.

  • Developed by researchers and professors in the Oregon State University's College of Engineering

  • This contact lens is designed for diabetics, to help them monitor their blood sugar levels easier than with an insulin pump

  • This contact lens will simplify the glucose monitoring process for diabetics by giving real-time glucose information to a phone or pump

  • Once the contact lens is completed, it will most likely be found in doctor's offices to be prescribed to patients

  • Estimated that the contact lens will be available to the public within the next 5 years

  • The researchers have stated that the goal is to make the price low and affordable for diabetics to easily have access to

  • Greg Herman, OSU professor and author of the study, said “We have fully transparent sensors that are working”; the next step is to develop the communication aspect between the lens and a phone/pump

  • Google has been developing a similar glucose monitoring contact lens; however, their version is not transparent (see right)

  • This contact lens should definitely stick around, as it makes checking glucose levels more efficient and makes living with and monitoring diabetes less of a hassle; Herman also said the lens might ultimately be used for cancer detection
