Firefighter Aiding Drone

This "flying firefighter" is reinventing the approach firefighters are taking.

  • Created by global drone manufacturer DJI

    • DJI is working with departments and consulting groups to see which models are best for each company

    • less than 10 pounds, waterproof, flight time of more than 30 minutes

    • carries two cameras mounted side by side; one beams back a live picture, while the second streams infrared video

  • Joshua Fire Department in Texas has operated a fleet of these drones for about a year, and have put them into use for house fires, law enforcement, and missing person searches

  • These kinds of drones are being used in several states across the US, including this specific one in Texas, and also in New York, California, and across the globe where similar drones assisted firefighters in Italy put out a fire

  • There is no set price as to how much these special drones will cost (different types have been priced from $20,000 to $85,000), but the “flying firefighter” is not aimed for the public market

    • Instead, it is designed to assist firefighters in the field

  • The impact of these drones has already been noticed and should cause the drones to stick around for a long time; according to DJI, the drones have saved at least 59 people in 18 separate incidents around the world
